Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Fellowships

Clinical Fellowships

Duties will include patient care responsibilities in the preoperative evaluation of patients admitted to the pediatric cardiac surgery service, intraoperative involvement with technical aspects of the surgical repair, and postoperative care both in the intensive care unit and on the ward. Opportunities for clinical research projects are also available. Individuals who have completed an accredited training program in cardiothoracic and are interested in additional training in pediatric cardiac surgery are eligible to apply. Must be eligible for and maintain a California medical license, or be eligible for a license exemption.

The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery is currently seeking accreditation for a one-year congenital cardiac surgery fellowship through the ACGME. Richard Mainwaring, MD, will be the program director of this fellowship once it is accredited.

Research Fellowships

Laboratory research opportunities emphasize objective inquiry of pediatric cardiac surgical practices such as cardiopulmonary bypass, circulatory arrest, cerebral perfusion, mechanical support, and fetal cardiac surgery using animal models. Basic science opportunities include programs investigating the fundamental aspects of heart valve tissue engineering supported by the Alex Vibber Endowment, encompassing valve tissue homeostatic biology and mechanobiology of valve cell-matrix interactions as well as the dynamics of cardiac progenitor cells and pathophysiology of thoracic collateral circulation.
